Drainage & Grading in Olympia, WA
If your Olympia yard turns to soup every winter, you're not alone. The ground here is built to hold water near the surface.
What's different about Olympia drainage
- Hardpan. Much of the area is loose sand and gravel over dense glacial till. Rain soaks in fast, then stops. That perched water is what floods lawns and crawlspaces.
- Slope seeps. On Westside and bayside slopes, water comes out of the hill in winter. The city treats seeping, tight-soil slopes over 15% as a hazard for a reason.
- A heavy wet season. Olympia gets about 50 inches of rain a year, most of it from October through April.
What we do
- Regrade so water runs away from the house, not toward it
- Build drainage to carry water where it can go
- Prep and grade bare ground for new lawns and beds

Olympia drainage FAQ
Why does water pool in my yard even on a hill?
Hardpan. Water hits the dense layer and runs sideways until it surfaces. We find where it's coming from before we pick a fix.
Can you grade a new lot or a torn-up backyard?
Yes. We grade bare ground for lawns, beds and patios.
When's the best time to look at drainage?
Winter. It's when you can see where the water actually goes. We'll come out in the rain.
