- Prairie soil. Thurston County's prairies sit on gravelly glacial outwash, the same ground as the Mima Mounds near Littlerock. It drains fast, which makes a good patio base and a thirsty summer lawn.
- Wet winters, dry summers. Winters here are mild and wet and summers are cool and dry. Low spots hold water from fall to spring, then lawns brown out by August.
- Protected gophers. The Olympia, Tenino and Yelm pocket gophers are found only in Thurston County and have been listed as threatened since 2014. In the unincorporated county and the Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater urban growth areas, permitted projects on mapped habitat soils go through the county's Habitat Conservation Plan. It doesn't apply inside city limits.
- Windstorms. The November 2024 bomb cyclone hit Thurston County with 54 mph gusts. Big storms leave limbs and debris across yards and driveways.
- Yard waste. The county's Waste and Recovery Center in Lacey takes yard waste, including branches and leaves. We haul it so you don't have to.

It depends on where you are. In the unincorporated county and the Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater urban growth areas, permitted projects on mapped habitat soils go through the county's Habitat Conservation Plan. Inside city limits, the county plan doesn't apply. The county's Permitting Map shows whether your parcel is mapped.
